So this page is basically where I'm keeping track of all the stuff
we know *should* exist in Caretaker, but for whatever reason isn't in any
of the files anyone has. Basically some of these are confirmed through screenshots,
some through old forum posts or weird metadata, and others are kind of
educated guesses based on how Unity projects usually look.
Note: A lot of the filenames here came from scraps of metadata
or comments from people who still had old builds. There is a potential for some
of them to not be correct. I tried my best to figure them out, and they’re
honestly pretty close enough so like you can kind of tell what they were supposed
to be. Sometimes there were multiple versions floating around, so I grouped
those together.
Category A - Missing Caretaker Assets
unused_room_01.unity
Only referenced once (in a leftover text file??) and seems like it would've
been a counterpart to the “unused_room_02” area people actually found.
unused_room_01_preview.png
The thumbnail for it. The preview is broken everywhere it shows up and only
loads as a half-corrupted header.
unused_room_02.unity
We know this existed because the room itself is in the leaked build, but the
original Unity scene file isn’t in any archives. Probably got overwritten.
test_smoothcamera_03.scene + smoothcamera_anchor_a.prefab
From the whole “spinning marker” camera thing people used to talk about.
musicroom_crank_old.fbx
Early version of the crank in the music room. Someone said the hitbox used
to be weird, so that checks out.
musicroom_crank_old.mat
Material for the same crank model, also referenced but not present anymore.
door_green_locked.anim
Whatever animation the green door was supposed to have. Never seen in-game.
door_green_locked.controller
Something to do with the door’s logic. Probably scrapped early.
basement_lowerlevel_navmesh.asset
This is weird because the game doesn't even have NPCs, but the metadata still
references a navmesh for the basement. File itself is gone. No idea how that works.
`
level_selector_unused.unity
That unused level select screen that only shows up if you glitch out the UI.
hiddenmessage_sign_set1.png
Seems to be the sign textures from that “three sign” room. Only the text
transcript survived.
hiddenmessage_sign_set2.png
Probablhy used for some other thing of signs but I have no idea other than that.
Category B - RealmWalker Assets
A bunch of these are from Magic’s old RealmWalker project. People recognized
them because they don’t really match Caretaker’s style, and there were posts
about Magic just copying whatever he already had lying around.
rw_beast_idle_v1.fbx
The “thing” people swear they saw in the bedroom area. Only the thumbnail name exists.
rw_beast_idle_v2.fbx
Slightly different rig maybe? Hard to tell.
rw_firehydrant_prop.fbx
Shows up in the Level 3 debug scene listings but not in the final game.
rw_blackflower_diffuse.png
The black flowers that appear in that grassy zone screenshot.
rw_plains_grass.mat
Grass material that probably came from an outdoor test map.
rw_ruins_stone_64.png
Stone texture that doesn't show up in any available builds.
rw_vfx_motes.particle
Some small floating particle effect. No surviving version found.
rw_npc_placeholder.prefab
Might’ve been a RealmWalker default NPC used as a dummy.
rw_ambient_loop_v1.ogg
Outdoor ambience loop. Not the one in Caretaker proper.
rw_road_sign_textures.dds
Matches the signs in the “street of houses” screenshot.
Note: I do want to mentiom that out of all of these things I've been trying to find an acutal RealmWalker file, as in a version that's actual playable. As of now I haven't been able to.
Category C - Random Downloads / Placeholders
These are the funniest ones because they’re just blatantly pulled from random
sites or tutorial packs Magic must’ve used back then. Some of the filename
references come from Unity’s old import logs.
brickwall_texture_free.jpg - generic old brick texture.
old_tutorial_pack_readme.txt - the readme for one of these packs, missing.
Category D - Developer Files & Logs
devlog_magic_2007_notes.txt
Mentioned in a thread but never actually posted anywhere.
project_settings_backup_v1.asset
Probably from before Magic switched machines.
mac2win_texture_map.csv
Some kind of mapping file used during the migration.
realmwalker_pitch_nightfall.doc
Nightfall's concept doc. People swear they saw it.
credits_unused.txt
Listed a few names that didn’t make it into the final credits.
debug_camera_log_042013.log
A camera test log, probably from early prototyping.
levels_meta_v0.2.json
Corrupted JSON referencing Level 2 and 3 toggles.
shader_stockpack_pre2008.shader
Old shader file Unity complained about a lot.
asset_import_report_2007.txt
Import errors from one of the early builds.
release_notes_draft_r1.md
Draft notes for a release that never happened.
Preview / Thumbnail Issues
A couple of preview images technically exist as filenames, but the data is
totally unreadable. Stuff like unused_room_01_preview.png and
realmwalker_beast_thumb.png only show a few bytes of header info
and then nothing. So they’re basically lost.
General Notes on Recovery
A lot of this was pieced together based on old screenshots people dug up.
The RealmWalker stuff matches what players remembered from that other project.
Magic’s switch from Mac to Windows definitely wiped out a bunch of asset paths.
Some filenames might be slightly off, but close enough to identify them.
